Individual / Trauma Caunselling

The counselling process is unique for everyone and it is very common for people to feel nervous, anxious or scared to talk to their therapist about their personal experiences. We understand that it may be difficult for you to be vulnerable immediately and that’s why we focus first on building a trusting relationship with you so you can feel comfortable sharing your feelings and thoughts with us.

Individual counselling sessions provide an objective and neutral perspective without having any other intention other than to support you to feel more empowered within yourself. It also helps to feel a sense of relief, release and more positive by giving voice to your own feelings and sharing them with someone instead of holding them in your body. As a therapist, we are trained to listen, explore, offer alternative perspectives, and NOT tell you what to do or “fix you”. We look at your concerns from an outside perspective to help you see the bigger picture, guide you to tap into your internal world, draw out your strengths, skills and resources to manage concerns that will help for the rest of your life. In this process, you will learn about yourself, the underlying reasons for your patterns of thoughts and behaviours, emotional regulation, learn new skills that help you to manage better of your stress and life challenges. Some people report feeling different and experiencing positive change by having someone simply hold a safe space for them to be heard – and by doing so, they realise that nothing needs to be solved, that their emotions have shifted just by going through this process of connection and understanding.

Turning up to counselling sessions requires deep courage and being brave enough to delve into our internal world. Counselling is a vital part of taking care of ourselves and a powerful activity to help us feel connected, supported, respected, empowered and lets us know that we matter.

Children Counselling / Play Therapy

Every child has their own story and sometimes children can find it hard to make sense of their feelings about what has happened in their life. Therefore, we provide a space safe for children to explore their feelings in a playroom that has a range of selected toys and materials that can help them to feel safe, validated and supported to express feelings, thoughts, experiences and behaviours.

We use a relational and child-centred approach to build trust within the therapeutic relationship to work alongside your child to gain an understanding of their feelings, guide parents on developing/maintaining a healthy attachment with their child; and enhancing emotional expression and regulation skills within you and your child to support the whole family’s wellbeing. We aim to help your child to develop a sense of safety, self-compassion and self-esteem to support them in relating to their world.

Supervision

The Cognitive Centres provide clinical supervision to students, counsellors, therapists, social workers, community service workers or any other professional for self-care support and ongoing professional development. We work alongside you to create a safe place for you to reflect on your practice, gain additional skills and knowledge to build your confidence as a competence professional. Supervision facilitated through online or phone session only.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a process where a profession using evidence base knowledge to facilitate change for the client. Those change includes:

  • Change in perspective and gain new insight/ new ways of dealing with current challenge/ situation.
  • Being more aware of feelings and enhance the window of tolerance to regulate feelings.

What happened with the story/ information that I have shared/ discussed during the counselling session?

All the information that you discussed with the therapist will remain confidentiality. We will make some simple notes in the secured database for the therapist to remember some important issues has been discussed. We only share the relevant information to third party with your consent (consent form will be signed by you before we share the information). However, if you share some information that we concern about your safety, other people safety and child abuse/ sexual abuse, then we need to breach the confidentiality as part of our duty of care and legislation requirement to ensure everyone’s safety.

How many sessions does it take to feel better after I start counselling?

It is important to go at your own pace to build trust, comfortability and connection with your therapist, which can take time. For some people, the process of relationship-building in itself is what can be most healing, especially if your concerns are relational-based, but this can be true for most people Learning about yourself and how you can navigate through life’s challenges can be a long-term process.

Counselling is not just about putting out the ‘fires’ in your life, but about maintaining mental wellness, and reconnecting for ongoing support. You will be the person who decided how many session will work for you as every person’s journey is single. As long as you find the session is benefits for you and you are welcome to get counselling support from us based on our availability. We always review the session to ensure the counselling is beneficial for you otherwise we will refer you to other support or therapist that can best support your needs.

What is the difference between talking to a therapist and someone I know personally?

It is great that you can get support from your friend and family as it is a very important coping skills for us to deal with stress/ challenging situation. However, sometime, you may not feel safe/ comfortable to share some your thoughts or perspective about some private issue as you may worry they will judged on you, impact your relationship with them, or they may not able to provide you some skills that can help you. Besides, they can be biased towards your situation and you are likely to be given advise about “what they think you should do” rather that what is the best interests for you.

In that case, a therapist can provide a safe place for your to feel free to express your feeling and thoughts without judgemental in a therapeutic relationship with your therapist and provide a more objective and neutral perspective to help you see the bigger picture, without having any other intention other than to support you feel more empowered within yourself.
